Branding

branding project

Scholastic Studio

Project Overview

While at Scholastic, I was asked to rebrand an internal tool originally known as Authoring Suite. The tool enabled authors to search, upload, and organize content for a consumer-facing platform. However, the existing name and identity didn’t clearly communicate its purpose or resonate with the people using it.

I led the rebranding process from concept to final design. This included making moodboards to capture the right tone, exploring a range of naming options, and iterating on logo directions. Each step was guided by feedback, ensuring the final brand felt both intuitive and inspiring for its users.

Moodboards

I collected visual inspiration for fonts, branding, and illustration styles that could shape the brand’s identity.

Naming & Logo Exploration

We explored several different name ideas that didn’t make the final cut. Below are the options I felt were the strongest and the reasoning behind them. Ultimately, we landed on the name Scholastic Studio.

Lucy

  • Origin: Latin, from Lucia (feminine form of Lucius).
  • Meaning: “Light” or “born at dawn/daylight,” from Latin lux (“light”).
  • Symbolism: Innocence, clarity, vision, illumination.
  • History: Traditionally given to girls born at dawn or in daylight.

Iris

  • Origin: Greek, from Íris (Ἶρις).
  • Meaning: “Rainbow.”
  • Mythology: Goddess and personification of the rainbow; messenger of the gods, connecting heaven and earth; often shown with golden wings.
  • Symbolism: Communication, speed, connection, vision, and insight.
  • Other associations:
    • Iris flower – known for its intricate, colorful blooms.
    • Iris of the eye – linked to perception, awareness, and clarity.

Final Result

Here are the initial sketches exploring the name Scholastic Studio, along with the evolution toward the final logo. I experimented with different typography treatments and visual styles to capture a balance between Scholastic’s established brand identity and the creative identity of the tool. The final logo reflects this; professional yet approachable, and aligned with Scholastic’s broader visual language.
